If you have spent some time in Subsaharian Africa you may have heard about the word sangoma. A sangoma is a positive presence in the life of every african man or woman. A sangoma is something between a traditional doctor and a benigne witchdoctor, a person whom to trust and to visit for help and inspiration.

But if you happen to have an african wife and you quarrel or do wrong to her and you hear her saying "it's high time I should see a sangoma" then you'd better take it very seriously. You'd better buy red roses and ask for forgiveness! If you can just afford you'd even better buy her a diamond ring or a brand new car!

Mi dà una ricarica da cinque, per favore?

Se siete in Inghilterra e avete esaurito il credito della vostra carta ricaricabile cosa chiedete al supermercato o dovunque si possa acquistare una ricarica?
Se dite "may I charge my phone, please?" è probabile che vi indichino un caricabatterie del modello più adatto.

Il termine più usato è "top up", sia come phrasal verb che come sostantivo. "May I top up my phone, please?" oppure "I need a 5 pound \*operator name\* top up, please". Sono di largo uso le carte magnetiche che consentono di caricare il telefono senza dover digitare codici o dover dire il proprio numero all'addetto. In questo caso si porge la carta e si può dire semplicemente "May I top up 5 pound, please?" oppure "a 5 pounds top up, please".

Altri termini usati per dire se si ha o meno credito sono "sorry, i don't have talktime", "i have enough talktime, thank you" oppure "sorry i don't have units, i'll call you later", "i need to keep my units for later".
Comunque se si hanno i requisiti minimi conviene sottoscrivere uno dei tanti abbonamenti con relative allowances. sono mediamente meno cari e più generosi che in Italia e invogliano a sfruttare la velocità di connessione che nelle città è veramente notevole.

Sicuramente viene richiesto un indirizzo di residenza e forse un conto in una banca inglese. Il possesso di una debit card (il nostro bancomat) in Inghilterra ha molto più valore del possesso di una credit card emessa fuori dal Regno Unito. Con una debit card si può pagare qualsiasi cosa per telefono o su internet, proprio come noi siamo abituati a fare con le carte di credito.

Se la mia macchina fa un rumore strano, brucia troppo olio o fa rumore quando freno, allora è arrivato per me il momento "to take it to the shop".

Questo non significa che devo portarla in un negozio, in un concessionario, per venderla perché è arrivato il momento di comprarne una nuova. "The shop", in questo caso, in inglese è il meccanico. Se la mia macchina è dal meccanico allora "It's at the shop".

Perciò se avete un problema con la macchina e un inglese vi dice "You'd better take it to the shop..." non offendetevi. Non vi sta consigliando di vendere il vecchio catorcio. Vi sta semplicemente e saggiamente consigliando di portarla a far vedere da un meccanico!
